The system consists of the cementitious, epoxy modified surface smoothing mortar Sikagard®-720 EpoCem and the special, suitable for contact with drinking tank water paint SikaCor®-146 DW.

Application Procedure:

1. Substrate Preparation:         

• Concrete

Concrete substrates must be prepared mechanically using abrasive blast cleaning or scarifying equipment to remove cement laitance and achieve an open textured surface. Weak concrete must be removed and surface defects such as blow holes and voids must be fully exposed. Repairs to the substrate, filling of blowholes/voids and surface levelling must be carried out using appropriate products from the Sikafloor®, Sikadur® and Sikagard® range of materials. All dust, loose and friable material must be completely removed from all surfaces before application of the product, preferably by brush or vacuum.

• Steel

Removal of solder of residues, rubbing of welded joints and coatings according to DIN EN 14879-1. Surface sandblasting up to Sa 2 ½ according to ISO 12944. Free from pollutants, greases and oils. Average surface roughness RZ ≥ 50 μm.

• Stainless Steel & Aluminum

Cleaning and uniform surface roughness according to ISO 12944-4 with non-metallic abrasives. Average surface roughness RZ ≥ 50 μm.

2. Product Application:

On the properly prepared concrete substrate apply the 3-component epoxy modified porous sealing mortar and smoothing the Sikagard®-720 EpoCem surface. Sikagard®-720 EpoCem offers excellent protection of concrete surfaces in highly corrosive environments, has excellent adhesion to concrete (fresh or hardened), forms a completely smooth surface and requires a minimum waiting time before the application of subsequent epoxy coatings. Sikagard®-720 EpoCem bears the CE marking and Performance Statement as a protective coating (EN1504-2) and as a PCC mortar of class R4 (EN1504-3).

In the second phase, apply SikaCor®-146 DW, a 2-component, solid-grade, epoxy paint, suitable for drinking water supply systems. SikaCor®-146 DW is a hard-elastic paint, resistant to mechanical stress and abrasion, shock and heat shock, and contains no solvents. It is suitable for drinking water, many foods, chemicals, cleaners and disinfectants and has excellent adhesion to steel, stainless steel, aluminum and mineral substrates. Its top advantages include the fact that it is applied in one layer, while no special treatment is required before putting it into use (first tank filling).
